Circular No. 2995 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. Cable Address: SATELLITES, NEWYORK Western Union: RAPID SATELLITE CAMBMASS EMISSION VARIABLE IN SAGITTA E. P. Aksenov, Sternberg Astronomical Institute, reports that an emission variable has been discovered by Dokuchaeva, Balazs and Vizi at R.A = 19h39m.8, Decl. = +16o38' (equinox 1950.0). An observation by O. D. Dokuchaeva on July 2.90 UT put the object at photographic magnitude 11.0. Before Apr. 1975 the magnitude was about 17. The object is similar to V1016 and V1329 Cyg. CYGNUS X-1 M. Oda and C. Canizares, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, report that SAS-3 observations that began on Oct. 9 show Cyg X-1 to be in a condition of extreme and unusual variability. This condition was still present as of Oct. 13.5 UT. The source exhibits continual, rapid flaring by factors of 2-4 on timescales of a few seconds. The mean intensity corresponds to that of the 'low state'. GALACTIC PLANE STUDY BY ARIEL 5 M. Watson and K. Pounds inform us that the Ariel 5 Sky Survey Instrument will be scanning the galactic plane from Nov. 12 to Dec. 2. It will be possible for the time variability of the brighter galactic x-ray sources to be monitored continuously. Those interested in making joint observations during this period are invited to contact M. Watson at the address: X-Ray Astronomy Group, Physics Department, University of Leicester, Leicester LE1 7RH, England. R CrB VARIABLES SU Tau and U Aqr have recently exhibited declines in brightness. Visual magnitude estimates by R. Lukas, Wilhelm Foerster Observatory, and by J. Bortle, Brooks Observatory, respectively: SU Tau. Aug. 17.85 UT, 14.0; 19.88, 14.2. U Aqr. Aug. 31.1 UT, 11.9; Sept. 14.1, 12.7; 20.0, 13.2; 22.1, 14.0; 24.1, 14.3. V1500 CYGNI Visual magnitude estimates by S. O'Meara, Harvard Observatory: Sept. 7.1 UT, 11.3; 20.0, 11.6; Oct. 3.1, 11.7; 14.1, 11.6. 1976 October 18 (2995) Brian G. Marsden
