Circular No. 3422 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-864-5758 1979 VA Eleanor Helin, California Institute of Technology, reports the discovery of a fast-moving asteroidal object on exposures with the 0.46-m Schmidt telescope at Palomar as follows: 1981 UT R. A. (1950) Decl. Mag. Nov. 15.16875 1 30.0 +25 12 11 15.42500 1 32.0 +25 10 16.10347 1 37.4 +25 04 11 X-RAY NOVA IN SAGITTARIUS L. Kaluzienskl and S. Holt, Goddard Space Flight Center, report the detection of a novalike outburst from a source in Sagittarius. The increase apparently commenced during Ariel-5 all-sky-monitor fine-mode observations of this region on Oct. 26, the 3-6-keV flux rising from a level of < 0.1 Crab on that date to ~ 0.5 Crab early on the 29th. Upper limits of ~ 0.07 Crab were obtained during fine-mode observations conducted during Oct. 18-20. The source is located at R.A. = 18h28m, Decl. = -24o.3 (equinox 1950.0), with a 90-percent-confidence error-circle radius of ~ 2o. The source was still bright when last observed on Nov. 4. It should be noted that the weak source 4U 1831-23 is located within the outer region of the error circle and thus cannot be excluded as the origin of the outburst. INTERSTELLAR C2 C. B. Cosmovici, Max-Planck-Institut fur Extraterrestrische Physik; and F. Strafella, Asiago Astrophysical Observatory, report the detection of C2 in absorption toward nu Cyg, zeta Oph, xi Peg and xi Per [Phillips 2-0 band, R(0) 876.0 nm, R(12) 875.9 nm] and in VI Cyg No. 12 = Hiltner 992 (Ap. J. Suppl. 1956, 2, 389) and omicron And [Q(2) 876.3 nm, R(0), R(12) and R(2) 875.6 nm]. Observations were made with a tilting Fabry-Perot spectrophotometer mounted at the 1.82-m Asiago telescope (resolving power 10**4). The strong C2 emission around 875.8 nm in T Lyr was used for calibration. Preliminary column densities are of the order of 10**17 m**-2. 1979 November 16 (3422) Brian G. Marsden
