Kaminski, University of Hawaii, report the following magnitudes obtained with the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility on Aug. 25, using a 7"3 aperture ( error ~ 0.1 mag): J = 14.1, H = 13.6, K = 13.4, N = 6.1, Q = 2.7. Observations indicate a color temperature of ~ 180 K. P. J. McCarthy, M. Strauss and H. Spinrad report imaging and spectroscopy with a CCD camera on the Lick Observatory's Shane 3-m telescope on Aug. 23.49 UT (r = 2.83 AU). The comet's integrated magnitude in the Lick red band pass was r = 13.04 +/- 0.01. There was a well-developed coma extending some 1'5 from the nucleus. The spectra reveal the presence of strong emission from CN, C2 and C3. Emission from neutral oxygen at 630-nm is extremely weak and possibly undetected. The C2 emission extends over at least 2'. (197) ARETE J. Schubart, Astronomisches Rechen-Institut, writes that continuing accurate observations of this object are necessary for determining the mass of (4) Vesta; he provides an extended ephemeris: 1985/86 ET R.A.
