Kirshner, Center for Astrophysics, writes: "J. Peters, using the Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope, has discovered a supernova on Nov. 16.4 UT in the interacting pair of galaxies catalogued as IC 1809 (= UGC 01996 = III Zwicky 48). The supernova is located 21" west and 8" north of IC 1809, which is the south preceeding of the pair of galaxies at R.A. = 2h28m8, Decl. = +22P42' (equinox 1950.0). Spectra show a broad P-Cyg profile at H-alpha, with a half- width from the blue edge of the absorption to the red edge of the emission of 9000 km/s, characteristic of a type-II supernova a few weeks after maximum light. I. R. G. Wilson has obtained photometry with the 0.60-m telescope (+ CCD) that show V ~ 17.4 on Nov. 16.4. Since the redshift for IC 1809 is ~ 5870 km/s, the magnitude is consistent with an absolute magnitude near -18 (for H = 50) and with the type-II classification." 1985 November 22 (4141) Daniel W. E.
