SUPERNOVA 1987A IN THE LARGE MAGELLANIC CLOUD J. A. Bailey, R. D. Cannon and M. S. Cropper, Anglo-Australian Observatory, telex: "We obtained CCD spectropolarimetry (resolution 0.15 nm, typical accuracies about 0.05 percent) on May 5 and June 3. Extensive structure in the polarization spectrum is now present. Polarization peaks with typical widths of 3-5 nm (FWHM) are associated with the absorption troughs or just blueward of the emission peaks. The main features observed on June 3 in observations covering 544-686 and 822-905 nm are as follows: 586.0 nm, peak polarization 1.0 percent in p.a. 5 deg; 611.0, 0.8 in 100; 645.0, 2.2 in 15; 651.5, 1.1 in 20; 838.0, 3.4 in 105. The main peaks in polarized flux (as opposed to percentage polarization) are at 588.0, 655.0 and 866.5 nm and have FWHM of 5-7 nm. The continuum polarization dropped from about 0.5 percent on May 5 to about 0.1 percent on June 3. The polarization features associated with H alpha decreased in width and increased in strength from May 5 to June 3." Visual magnitude estimates: June 3.34 UT, 3.2 (D. A. J.
