The magnitude was 0.5 to 1.0, and the tail, 5 to 8o long, extended toward Orion. H. M. Maitzen, A. Moffat and H. E. Schuster, European Southern Observatory, inform us that the comet was found by Maitzen and Schuster on May 22.96, but it could not be photographed until the following night (cf. IAUC 2246). They subsequently learned that the comet's tail had been seen by F. Gomez, technician in charge of meteorological observations at the Observatory, on the evening of May 21 Another independent discovery, on May 23, has been reported by Jorge Balseiro, of Mercedes, Uruguay. Carruthers, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, reports the observation of interstellar molecular hydrogen in far ultraviolet spectra of xi Persei, obtained in a rocket flight on March 13. Preliminary comparison with laboratory spectra indicates a column density of molecular hydrogen of order 5 x 10**19 cm**-2, comparable with that of atomic hydrogen along the same path.
